APPG on Drones and Modern Conflict Co-Chair questions the Prime Minister on the abuse allegations by the SAS in Afghanistan

Stewart McDonald MP, APPG on Drones and Modern Conflict Co-Chair, called for the Prime Minister to ‘commit to an Australia-style independent inquiry’ during Prime Minister Questions after unlawful killing allegations by a SAS unit in Afghanistan were revealed in a BBC Panorama report. The Prime Minister replied ‘we do not comment on special forces’ and that ‘does not mean that we in any way accept the factual accuracy of the claims’.
APPG on Drones and Modern Conflict Vice-Chair’s question on UK’s role in execution of death penalties in Saudi Arabia

Baroness Bennett of Manor Castle, Vice-Chair of APPG on Drones and Modern Conflict, asked the Government to publish a full report on the assistance UK provides Saudi Arabia and whether any security forces played any role in the death penalties carried out in Saudi Arabia. No response was given to the question but the Lord promised to write to her later.
APPG Chair Participates in the Explosive Weapons in Populated Areas Political Declaration Negotiations

Stewart McDonald MP, Chair of APPG, has attended a consultation for a political declaration to minimise the humanitarian impact of explosive weapons in populated areas (known as EWIPA) that took place under Ireland’s leadership from 6-8 April 2022. Comments made by Stewart McDonald MP illustrated how the UK needs to strengthen its protection of civilians, stating that the Scottish leadership had taken actions to “develop policy on civilian protection”.
APPG on Drones and Modern Conflict Vice-Chair’s contribution to Armed Force Act (Continuation) Order 2022

Baroness Smith of Newnham, Vice-Chair of the APPG on Drones and Modern Conflict, participated in the debate on the Armed Force Act (Continuation) Order 2022 and said: ‘We need to ensure that our Armed Forces are fit for the 21st century and for the many tasks that are asked of them. I hope that in her reply the Minister will be able to go a little broader than the legislation in front of us today.’

APPG on Drones and Modern Conflict Vice-Chair’s contribution to Procurement Bill

Bill on civilian protection in conflict, submitted by APPG on Drones and Modern Conflict Vice-Chair, Lord Hodgson, to the Lords Members Bill ballot

Lord Hodgson entered the ballot with the following text:
‘Short title: Conflicts (Protection of Civilians) Bill
Long title: A bill to establish an authority to track, assess and respond to harm to civilians resulting from UK and UK-partnered military actions; to require the Secretary of State to implement a related strategy to strengthen the protection of civilians in conflict; and for connected purposes.’
